On Culture: the progressive new intersection of VR and promenade performance

The intersection of art and technology is one of the most interesting creative spaces – so great to hear about progressive new performance WHIST coming to London this month and then touring the UK.

‘WHIST’, created by dance company AΦE, is a new production combining VR with interactive promenade theatre. WHIST incorporates 360˚ interactive film, soundscapes and an architectural art installation to create an environment that blurs all boundaries – between consciousness and unconsciousness, reality and fiction, the physical and the virtual.

Inspired by Sigmund Freud’s dream theory, WHIST invites audiences on a journey into the unconscious mind, where instincts will be the guide through a narrative of surreal dreams and fears. And you, or your subconscious, choose your own path.

The performance incorporates 360˚ interactive film, soundscapes and an architectural art installation to create an environment that blurs all boundaries – between consciousness and unconsciousness, reality and fiction, the physical and the virtual.

Using interactive ‘triggers’ positioned in the virtual world by its makers, WHIST allows for a total of 76 narrative possibilities to exist, creating a unique experience for each viewer. No simple ‘red pill vs. blue pill’ format, WHIST implements interactive elements, subtly woven into the film to effect unconscious decision making.

According to the team behind the show, this puts the production at the very forefront of immersive storytelling innovation – leaving the strings that bind and pull at all times invisible. You, or your subconscious, choose your own path.

On Beer: East London’s Burgeoning Beer Mile (and a bit)

The CultureJukebox team are fond of a real ale or two (or three or four…)  So, it’s great to hear about some awesome new breweries opening up close to our home in East London.

In fact, the team here thrilled that some of these new breweries are putting purpose before profit too. Opening up near each other, this new brewing scene is top tribute to a fantastic beer culture that is brewing in our corner of the capital.

So, what’s new?

The Magic Spells Brewery, Leyton

The newest and latest independent Craft Brewery in East London currently produces three bottled beers:  A Craft Lager, a Pale Ale (called Hackney Hare) and an IPA.

Magic Spells’ beers are a somewhere between modern brewing techniques and old styles and methods; taking inspiration from classics and adding a modern twist. The brewery creates distinct flavour profiles for the beers – an up front and bold hoppy flavour, a satisfying bite to the beer, smoothly balanced due to a nice malty body and warming alcohol.

The brewery sources most of the malt used in its beers from the UK plus British hops boosted by punchy flavoured hops from New Zealand and America.

It was founded by Jas Hare, an Eastender born-and-bred, who has a fantastic track record in the drinks industry as well as being a craft beer enthusiast.

Magic Spells Beers are available in both 330ml and 500ml bottles with an RRP of £2.49 and £2.99 respectively. They’re all available online, and in venues around London too.

 

Nirvana Brewery, Leyton

Another new brewery for 2017, Nirvana does something completely different. A low / no-alcohol brewery – sure a great idea for our increasingly health-conscious times.

It’s the UK’s only micro brewery dedicated to zero and low ABV craft beers. Beers on offer include Mantra (an IPA at 0.7% ABV), Kosmic (a stout at 0% ABV), and Chakra (a stout at 1% ABV). The team at Nirvana promise “no compromises” on flavour, so we’re excited about our first visit!

Pretty Decent Beer

Opening up just down the road in Forest Gate, Pretty Decent Beer Co has just opened its doors.

On Sheridan Road in Forest Gate, near Cann Hall Road, this brewery looks like one to watch. The team promise: “We make decent beer and do decent things with the money you spend drinking it. We brew our beer in London and every bottle helps to fund sustainable water projects around the world.”

 

The CultureJukebox team hasn’t had chance to visit yet, but this brewery promises to be really superb – we like what we’ve seen on Instagram so far.

And Pretty Decent Beer Co is just a few minutes walk from some of Forest Gate’s best independent venues – The Wanstead Tap for an incredible selection of real ale and provocative programming, Burgess & Hall for beautiful wines; and the quirky and delicious Hawkes cider HQ.

On Music: The Garage Relaunches in February 2017

The CultureJukebox team has followed the recent ups and downs of London’s live music and club scene with a keen interest over the past year..

.. so, it was great to receive a press release this week about The Garage in Islington relaunching this February. Under new ownership and following extensive refurbishment, the venue is being transformed.

It’s always been about the music, so with plans for big club nights and a programme of gigs it looks like that is going to remain the priority. But the owners have clever plans. The building will also become home to a  daytime coffee spot, craft beer and cocktail bar and more.

It has been acquired by DHP Family, the team behind Oslo in Hackney and Nottingham’s awesome Rock City (a CultureJukebox favourite venue!) In addition to refurbishing the main music venue and adding a brand new sound system, three new spaces have also been created within the building, united under the Garage concept. The centre piece of the redevelopment is the venue itself; The Garage. This 600 capacity room will be restored to former glories, with a brand new PA and lighting.

At the front of the building, the former “Mini-Bar” will hark back to the filling station stores of small-town America with The General Store, an all-day café and bar serving craft beer and cocktails. The design of The General Store will feature reclaimed gas pumps, huge beer fridges and quality coffee.

Upstairs, Thousand Island will be an intimate space hosting breaking and specialist forward-thinking acts most evenings, and late-night socials later in the week featuring an unpretentious programme anchored by collaborative club nights and Thousand Island presents shows. Operating independently from the rest of the space, the room will feature a mirror ball-filled ceiling, faces of friends of the venue across one wall, and a well-stocked bar.

Since opening in 1993, The Garage has hosted artists as diverse as Radiohead, Lil Yachty, Mogwai, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and many more stellar names.

For one reason or another we have just missed out on taking over this iconic venue and breathing new life into it. Its location layout and history are perfect for what we are looking for in a venue and we look forward to reinventing the space for a new generation.” ~ George Akins, Managing Director

With Farringdon’s Fabric back with a bang, The Printworks opening in Canada Water, The Red Lion’s new ballroom in Leytonstone selling-out their club nights and more going on around the capital. 2017 is shaping up to be a good year for London nightlife..

 

On Wellness: FloVibe Festival Announced

Feeling good has never been more important to us, and to British festival-goers. So, this January it was really timely to receive a press release about the super cool sounding FloVibe Festival.

On Trends: Personalisation and Crafting your own Chivas Regal whisky

The CultureJukebox team is always on the look-out for trends that way we see the world around us, so it was intriguing to spot the Chivas Regal space that’s opened up in East London. A real-world demonstration of classic craft, making, and personalisation.

It offers people the chance to craft their very own blended Scotch whisky under the guidance of experts in an intimate setting in Shoreditch.

Chivas Regal is the world’s first luxury Scotch whisky (we did not realise that!) and has launched The Blend. This space is an exclusive whisky bar and ‘Art of Blending’ experience.

The Blend offers a unique opportunity to create your own bespoke, blended whisky. Each experience offers an Art of Blending’ session from Chivas Regal whisky experts.

It’s a chance to learn about the heritage, history and origins of single malt and grain whiskies, tasting examples from Speyside, Islay, the Highlands and Lowlands as well as delicate grain Scotch whisky.

It’s always good to learn too! On this experience you see how the spirit is ‘blended’ to create the distinctive Chivas Regal house style.

And here’s one of the best bits: everyone can create and take home your very own blended whisky to enjoy too!

On Internet Culture: Looking Forward To The Web Summit

The CultureJukebox team are hyped to be attending this year’s WebSummit in Lisbon. We are going to be writing about new digital trends, social enterprise and the intersection of the internet and popular culture.

More than 7,000 UK attendees will join more than 40,000 others from 165 different countries at this year’s Web Summit.

It takes place between November 7th and 10th, more details are here. The UK attendees include 100 startup companies, 108 speakers, 167 investors and 306 journalists.

Over the three day event, UK attendees will look to promote the growing technology sector in the UK with 12 startups participating in START, Web Summit’s programme for high potential startups. UK Investors will also participate in Investor office hours which gives them the opportunity to meet with hundreds of startups while 108 speakers will participate across Web Summit’s 15 conference stages.

On Music: Giggs at the #ASICSSECRETGIG

We always love it when brands get involved in supporting new and progressive music, so was great to get an invite to the #ASICSSECRETGIG.

The Japanese sneaker champs were celebrating the launch of their  Chameleoid pack with a secret gig in London.

A lit party – ASICS Tiger were joined by some of the biggest names in UK music and more than 600 guests. It was hosted by BBC 1Xtra DJ Sian Anderson. The night kicked off with Melody Kane and Logan Sama on the Decks. A live set followed from one of the fastest emerging names in UK Grime: AJ Tracey Followed by a huge headline set from Giggs.

The new kicks combine progressive Japanese sports tech and global stylings. The Sole Supplier crew made this film from the launch:

On Data: Dress For Our Time explores global migration

Dress For Our Time, by award-winning artist is a unique installation that brings statistics and fashion together to explore one of the world’s most pressing issues – migration.

The installation has been created by designer Helen Storey MBE RDI (London College of Fashion, UAL Centre for Sustainable Fashion). By using innovative technology, the latest data and Helen’s unique voice in fashion, Dress For Our Time delves into the complex matter of human displacement in a pioneering endeavour to change the social narrative of this complex topic. A really impressive idea.

The dress itself is a decommissioned refugee tent which once housed a refugee family in Jordan and was gifted to the project by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In giving the tent a meaningful reincarnation as a public installation, Dress For Our Time transcends both data and fashion by humanising the numbers to tell a bigger story.

“Worldwide, one in every 113 people on the planet is now either a refugee, internally displaced, or seeking shelter – but numbers means nothing, if they don’t affect your own heart. This project uses the power of fashion to help us connect to the previously unimaginable and asks how each and every one of us can remain a humanitarian in such a time of colossal and irreversible change”. ~ Helen Storey, Professor of Fashion and Science at London College of Fashion, UAL

The UNHCR has logged a record 65.3 million people currently displaced worldwide and 21.3 million refugees.  Dress For Our Time uses the very latest data, representing one year’s worth of UNHCR statistics collected by its Field Information and Coordination Section. This information will be used to visualise the refugee crisis and demonstrate its true human element, through a striking animation that will be projected onto the dress itself using data visualisation developed by Holition. The animation is formed of points of light, each representing one hundred human lives and creatively illustrates the journey each one takes in search of a better life. The lights flow from six points, depicting the continents where the refugees have moved from, before populating the countries in which they find shelter. The image that emerges is not a world map of countries but a map of human migration.

 

The piece opened to the public earlier this month, and will be on show at The Science Museum until September 4th. For more information click here and follow the hashtag #Dress4OurTime. A powerful, timely and beautifully produced idea.

On Design: Viva The Cycle Revolution

So, it turns out we’re in the Cycle Revolution show at The Design Museum. We’re featured in the cycling stories section, after we cycled to Cannes to unsuccessfully crowdsource a film. So it was only right and fair that we went down to the exhibition to check it out. Here’s what we thought:

For those that don’t know, Cycle Revolution is the last ever show at the Design Museum’s Shad Thames home before the institution moves on to pastures new (in Kensington), so the curators really wanted to go out on something of a high. And they have, this is a cracking final show.

Mixing insights into design, an overview of cycling culture and a living museum of the sport’s most memorable moments (and there’s been a few of those over recent years!) The exhibition is a must for anyone who loves cycling culture.

Cycle Revolution showcases 77 bikes in total. What’s really special is that it’s a celebration of all cycling – from machines built for speed, to commuter bikes and to bikes that are all new.

 

If you’ve got even a passing interest in the UK’s cycling culture, this exhibition is a must attend – it really needs a visit to Shad Thames to do it just. It is open until June 30th, and information on the Design Museum website here.

The show is amazing celebration of all cycling culture – from the kit, to the bikes, to the beers, the coffees, & the culture of cycling – and it’s coming to Manchester for the first time before returning to The Old Truman Brewery between May 20 and 22.
